The Lima Zoo

These pictures of the animals in the Lima Zoo are for the children. We thought the animals all looked fairly happy. They have nice large areas to live in and they were well fed. This man in the penguin area was holding each little animal by the head and hand feeding it small fish. One we counted that he fed about 15 fish. The others were like they were waiting in line and he would push them back and make them wait.

This Camel had one other one in the area with it. They had one big hump and we wondered how we could ride it.

This is Sister Hawkins whistling to this bird and taking it's picture. The man was holding it and he would feed it sunflower seeds one at a time. The birds had such rich colors and they were very loud.

This is a taper. The end of it's nose would move around kind of like an elephants trunk. They just laid there and moved their noses. I think they are in the pig family. They have cloven houves.

Here is grandpa trying to look like the giraffe. He said he could not life his leg like that. In the background there are two ostridges eating from a bowl. The giraffe is back where we can't see it in this picture.

We had a great time at this zoo. They had a restaurant there that served a traditional dish made by puting meats and veggies into a hole and cooking it with hot rocks etc. Then they serve it all on one big plate. We had goat, chicken, pork, cooked bananas, two kinds of potatoes, some kind of a pea like thing, a sweet tamale with raisin (one raisin) in it, and corn that they call chaco which has really big kernals and they are very light yellow and tough and not much flavor. It was all very good. I liked the tamale and the chicken best. We also had the traditional drink made from purple corn. Some day I will learn the names of these things. But, for dessert we had Picalones which are a donut like thing that is served with a sugar cane syrup and is made from yams, pumpkin and potatoes and flour. They are served hot and so very good. We bought a mix to make some of our own at home.
